Someone Like Me is a compelling story of a young girl who left a dysfunctional home at the age of fourteen only to fall into a marriage with a classic abuser. The story is a well-written and easy read and I was intrigued by the presentation of spousal abuse from the point of view of a young, uneducated, but kind and loving mother.

The story has a distinct southern accent and deals effectively with the overcoming of adversity. I found it interesting and enjoyable.

Someone Like Me contains the true flavor of American Realism and is reminiscent of William Dean Howell's A Modern Instance.
